Today’s multitasking computing environment
does not stop with data integration. Computers, in today’s technology,
extend into the telephony realm.
PC-Based phone systems are computers with
installed hardware and software that allow the computer to route and manage
incoming and outgoing phone calls more dynamically then the older
technology (PBX) where calls are handled by proprietary equipment. Since it
is a non-proprietary computer, it predominantly features a familiar
graphical administrative interface, as apposed to the key functions of
standard analog PBX systems. This marriage of computers and phones allow
enhancements to features such as voice mail management, auto-attendant
answering and unified-messaging as well as far more robust administration.
Because the technology
differences are on the back end, usability and experience for the phone sets
themselves remains unchanged.
Additionally, expanding a PC-based phone
system tends to be easer than the with older technology competitors. PBX
expansion tends to be more expensive and limited than PC-based equipment and
configuration can be a lengthy involved process often requiring expensive
maintenance plans and locking businesses into captivity with a particular
provider. Simple administrative tasks such as add/moves/changes and mailbox
setup cannot easily be managed in-house and often requires a specialized
technician at additional cost.
CTI (Computer Telephony Integration) is less
expensive to incorporate into a business process with a PC-based phone
system. With CTI you can automatically and natively integrate information
provided by callers with customer-related applications such as contact
management software or e-mail managers such as Microsoft Outlook. Telecom
features such as Caller ID, DNIS and time logs can more easily be
incorporated into existing CRM or business process software.
